Agua Dulce Beach Resort FAQ

Agua Dulce Beach Resort and Hotel - Puerto Jimenez, Osa Peninsula

hotel in Puerto Jimenez with Pool

Is Agua Dulce Beach Resort for me?

If you enjoy beach destinations focused on osa peninsula vacationoutdoor adventure, relaxation and wildlife encounters – Agua Dulce Beach resort is definitely for you. We are a small beach resort with just over 30 rooms – not a mega resort like those you find in Cancun and other all-inclusive destinations.

We are located in one of the worlds most bio-diverse areas so you will see and be able to photograph lots of wildlife. We’re located directly on Costa Rica’s Golfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf) which is one of four tropical fjord systems in the world and was almost chosen as a Wonder of the World for it’s intense levels of biodiversity and natural beauty. Agua Dulce Beach Resort is off the beaten path in a remote region of Costa Rica so our internet may be spotty at times but is good in general.

Our rooms are nice, clean, secure and offer pool and garden views – we are not a large, luxury resort – but we do offer a nice, comfortable home base to sleep and relax while you explore one of the worlds most amazing vacation destinations. Our second story restaurant and bar offers views of the ocean and relaxed, casual dining with the sounds of wildlife serving as the background music.

We are considered a good destination for backpackers, single travelers, outdoor enthusiasts, anglers, photographers, families with kids, students and all those who would like to escape the stress of daily life and reconnect with friends and family in a natural paradise. If you are hear to photograph the legendary flora and fauna of the area or simply need to get away from it all, Agua Dulce is the place for you.

Is the beach close?

Yes, we are located right in front of the nicest beach in the Puerto Jimenez area. There is a good (beginner/intermediate) place for surfing and boogie boarding to the right of our resort and a beach volleyball net. You will see lots of scarlet macaws dining on sea almonds just in front of the resort in the morning and evenings. There is no lifeguard on duty so please do not go in the ocean if you are not an experienced swimmer. Kayak fishing and or mangrove kayaking is also a popular activity that can be booked right at the resort. Bring lots of STRONG sunscreen!

How far away is the resort from town?

The town is just 15 minutes away by car and has lots of little restaurants and shops and is a great way to interact and experience the local culture. If you don’t have a rental car, taxis can be arranged at the front desk. We recommend booking tours at the hotel…not in the town – this allows us to put you with a qualified/licensed guide that offers safe equipment and or knowledge of the area. Like anywhere else in the world keep an eye on your cameras/valuables. Be aware of your surroundings

Is there whale watching?

The best time to see humpback whales at our resort is August through October. Humpback whales actually give birth in the gulf right in front of our resort and teach their young to hunt and dive. We offer tours from the resort on safe boats with expert guides. During the above time periods you will almost always get a chance to see them as they are in the gulf …as opposed to the open ocean which can make them harder to encounter. Don’t forget your camera!

How far is Agua Dulce Beach Resort from San Jose?

We are only 45 minutes from San Jose if you take a local flight. We recommend Sansa Airlines. The flight is absolutely beautiful as you cross Costa Rica’s Talamanca Mountains, coffee plantations, and Central America’s largest coastal rain forest. This may be the most memorable tour of your trip!

Can I drive from San Jose to Agua Dulce Beach Resort?

Yes! It is an adventure and can take 7 hours or more, but you can make the drive and it is incredibly scenic. In the old days because of bad road conditions the drive was extremely long and risky due to high river waters and crumbling or near-nonexistent roads. Now the ride is incredibly smooth and the journey is beautiful if you’re new to the country. Those who have made the trip several times before opt for the quick 45 minute flight. Some people extend their vacation and stay a night at another coastal hotel to break up the driving before arriving at Agua Dulce Beach Resort to really explore Costa Rica’s Pacific coast.

Do I need a Passport to enter Costa Rica?

Yes a valid Passport is required that does not expire within 90 days from the time you will EXIT the country (important detail). You may use your foreign drivers license for up to 90 days after you enter the country as well if you are renting a car.
